Instructions to make Blooming Onion:
- Put the onion on a chopping board. Cut off 1/2 inch from the pointy stem end of the onion and then peel. Place the onion cut-side downtown. Starting 1/2 inch from the root make a downward cut all the way through to the board. Repeat to make 4 evenly spaced cuts around the onion. Continue slicing between each section until you have 16 evenly spaced cuts. Turn the onion on it's root-side back and gently begin to peel open the sections unfurling from the outside towards the center.
- Place the blooming onion in cold water at least for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile take a mixing bowl and add in 2 tsp corn flour, 2 tsp all purpose flour, a pinch of turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala powder, salt and some water as needed. Whisk them well to make a thin batter.
- Next break the egg, add it to the batter, whisk and keep it aside.
- Now take out the onion from the cold water and place it in a separate bowl, cut-side up. Then dust it with remaining all purpose flour. Gently shake it so that the onion is fully coated, especially between the petals.
- Next dip the onion into the prepared batter and sprinkle flour all over it once again. Then deep fry it in hot oil until golden brown over a medium flame.
- Remove the onion from oil, drain on a paper towel and then serve.
Dip the onion, cut side down, into the egg mixture until fully coated. Seperate peatls to coat thoroughly with batter. Place onion upright in a shallow bowl and remove center core with a circular cutter or apple corer. Serve hot with chili sauce and dipping sauce. To make the batter: In a medium bowl, beat egg and add milk.
